St Nicholas, Bransdale

Description of the Church

This building replaced the old Cockan Chapel in 1886. Its site is certainly unique. The beautiful moorland dale has for centuries been served from this site, and in its early years, the chapel probably had connections with the Priory of Keldholme. Today the barrelled roof covers a nave and chancel, while there is a west tower with two bells. In the churchyard can be seen the ancient font, and the church owns a silver cup and paten dated 1637. Until quite recently, the oak cross was carried out at Rogation tide perambulations.

There are several 18th century graves, one carrying a very amateur stone of 1773, and another bearing a finely lettered copper plaque with a verse to Thomas Gowen.
